“Your Vehicle gets you out there, Our Training gets you home”
Whether you’re camping locally with the family or undertaking an international expedition, one thing is certain – training lowers risk.
With decades of international experience in every environment, off-road driver training and education is our core principle. We offer a number of courses from a single day introduction to multi-week, international trips and complex and advanced recovery training for rare or specialised situations. Other than at the Overland Expo, we don’t teach in classrooms – we only operate “open-course”, that is, operating in the real-world for authentic experiences – primarily in the Western USA.
Like our international trips, we focus on small groups. For most of our training courses, the student to instructor ratio is 1:1 or 2:1, the latter works well for couples sharing a vehicle. With the exception of our one day course, our training courses are all inclusive – accomodation, all food and drink, course materials and instruction is included. We find that students prefer to use their own vehicle, but we can arrange suitable vehicles for your use anywhere we train.
Our scheduled training dates are always available on our calendar.
We offer a single introductory course – a one day “Introduction to Overland Travel”. It touches on four-wheel drive systems, vehicle handling, safety, and how to avoid getting stuck.
Stepping up from our Introductory Course we offer two foundation courses – a two day “Overland and Expeditionary Driving” course and a four day “Overland and Expeditionary Driving with NPTC Qualification” course. This is our most popular course, and we currently offer it in Death Valley, CA and Moab, UT.
We’re the only company in the USA that can offer City & Guilds NPTC training and assessments. Our foundation course is built on the City & Guilds “Level 2 Award in Off-Road Driving”, and you have the option of either two days solid training without an assessment, or 3-5 days, including two days training, one day assessment and a further two days consolidation where we run more technical trails to put your new found skills into practice. This course is designed to promote safe, responsible and enjoyable off-highway and off-road driving. It consists of a combination of instruction, hands-on training and the assessment.
You’ll depart this course with the knowledge of how to deal with most situations that the recreational off-highway driver will encounter.
You can read more about the City & Guilds NPTC criteria here.
We offer a number of advanced courses, which focus on driving and recovery in more specialised circumstances. These courses are usually 5 days or longer, as the focus is on Expeditionary Driving which needs an element of remoteness and distance to be realistic. These courses include the following:
- Desert Driving
- Mountain Driving
- Tropical Rainforest Driving (outside of the USA)
- Technical Off-Road Driving
- Trailer Handling
We can offer any of our courses in a group environment specifically tailored for your needs at your location or one of ours. Please contact us for more information.
While our scheduled courses can cover most students needs, we’re happy to tailor a course to your training needs, location and group. Please contact us for more information.
